The Flabob Air Academy program provides an amazing opportunity for students aged 12 through 17 to become inspired through the wonders of aviation. This Tom Wathen Center four-day academic program incorporates STEM learning: Science taught through real-world applications, Technology activities used to enhance learning, Engineering skills gained through hands-on experiences and Math taught from an aviation perspective. In this program, twenty aviation-oriented instructors inspire students utilizing the "cool" factor of aviation:
History becomes relevant when taught by an air-minded educator who discusses how different our world would be without aviation.
The Theory of Flight includes building an airplane wing structure.
Weather and Navigation are interactive classes taught to the students from an Aviator's perspective. Yes, studying weather can be fun!
Students learn by building a stick and tissue model plane that they fly.
A field trip to March Air Museum teaches students about methods of propulsion as well as brings history to life through an amazing collection of aircraft.
A class favorite is the model rockets the students build and fly.
On day five, students are invited back to the airport for a "Young Eagles" flight in an airplane flown by EAA Chapter One volunteers.
In addition, the recently added "Careers" component uncovers opportunities into many well-paying careers in the aviation industry. As many people in aviation are reaching retirement age, aviation careers are becoming available. Michael Crutcher, Flabob Airport Preparatory Academy school student stated, "Air Academy changed my life. It gave me new a direction to consider."
We offer two programs during the summer. Spaces are limited - schedule now. Tuition is $95 per session and includes lunch during the academic program days. The Middle School studentís session is June 18th through 21st with flights on July 13th and the High School student's session is July 9 through 12 with flights on July 13th.
The Tom Wathen Center has also created a new two-day Air Academy entitled "There's a Place for You in Aviation". This program focuses on aviation opportunities as well as career planning and also concludes with a Saturday flight in an airplane provided by EAA Chapter One volunteers. The cost is $50.00 per person for the two-day session and includes lunch. This is a great chance for groups such as Scouts, Science/Robotics Clubs, Boys and Girls Club, etc. to explore new opportunities Please contact Kathy at the information shown below for scheduling the two-day program.
